The beauty of a "river town" is unquestioned. Bloomsburg is blessed to have not only the Susquehanna River, but also Fishing Creek, as its neighbor. Both waterways add recreation and scenery to our community.
Sadly, and much too frequently, the citizens near these waterways have experienced the power that nature can unleash with simple water.
Bloomsburg has endured many floods, but there have been certain floods that are burned into the fabric of the town.
1972: Agnes
Over 10 inches of rain fell, cresting the Susquehanna River at 31.2 feet on June 25.
2011: Lee
On September 9, the unthinkable happened: the River crested at 32.75 ft, one and a half feet higher than the Agnes flood, after portions of our region received over 15 inches of rain.
Marty Coyne, tennis coach at Bloomsburg University, spear-headed the work of MANY Bloomsburg University student-athletes in helping the community recover from the Lee flood. He is a fabulous photographer, capturing many images of the community during those first days of flood recovery.
